About my music collection

I have never really kept a journal or a diary. But in a way, my music collection has become something very close to that.

For me, it is not just a collection of records, CDs, or songs. It is a back catalogue of memories. It holds stories, friendships, moments, places, and feelings from different parts of my life. Almost every record I have kept has a reason. There is often a memory attached to it, or a person, a certain period, a night out, a radio show, a shop, a concert, or simply a feeling I do not want to lose.

When I was younger, I thought music should mainly be judged by how it sounds. I focused on the quality of the song, the production, the creativity, and the talent behind it. Of course, all of that still matters. But as I have grown older, I have realised that music is much more than just sound.

Music is also about context. It is about where you were when you first heard it. Who you were with. What was happening in your life. What it made you feel at that exact moment. Sometimes a song is not technically perfect, but it can still mean everything to you because of the story behind it.

That is why I could never look at my collection in a cold or purely rational way. That would feel too heartless. Music appreciation is not only about judging songs. It is also about remembering life.

So I guess my collection is a kind of storage room for memories and emotions. A place full of personal history, stories, and beautiful baggage. And I mean that in the best possible way.
